OLD DICK

I don’t recall asking for a cuppa tea, but it appears I’ve got one. Look at it there, steaming away in front of me. I’d rather be making sure no bastard’s stolen my mooring before I die than drinking tea with this lot, but you can’t always have everything you want.

The way I see it, this deckie needs a good kick up the backside. Standing there wringing his hands, not looking his captain in the eye? In my day he’d be icing his arse for a week.

Okay, so he’s been messing with a skirt he shouldn’t have messed with. Blah blah blah. Have these people never met a deckie before? They’ll chase after anything that moves and even a few things that don’t. It’s not worth fighting. It’s better to just let them get it out of their system. A man with skirts in his head is a man daydreaming, likely to get himself knocked into the reef. I’d rather they flog it out themselves somewhere I don’t have to know about than me flogging it out of them with a piece of hose.

Now the deckie looks like he’s seen a tiger snake and he’s backpedalling himself into the doorway. Gives his head a hard, loud clunk on the architrave.

The young woman with the black eye is laughing. She makes me nervous when she laughs because I really do worry that something is going to come out of her, she laughs that hard.

The young fella says, No one’s flogging anyone, Dad.

The meat-headed bloke with the tattoo up his neck says, Speak for yourself, Dicky.

That’s enough, the woman says. She sounds stern but she takes my hand and squeezes it. I like it when she does that. Reminds me of Luce. Now the young woman’s hugging me again. Jeepers, they’re handsy, this mob.

All right, I say. I’m dying, but no need to make a song and dance of it.

Look, I say. You want to make a deckie behave himself? I’ll tell you what I know. Listen up.
